Renewal and Reconnection: The Relationships That Make This Work Meaningful
Renewal and Reconnection

April is a natural season for renewal and reconnection.
It gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and return to the people, purpose, and priorities that matter most. Amid busy schedules and daily demands, it is easy to focus solely on tasks and outcomes. But this past month reminded me that what truly makes this work meaningful is connection.
Attending the Pacific Dental Conference last month was an incredible experience, not only because of the education and insight it offered, but because of the people it brought together. One of the greatest perks of the conference was the opportunity to connect with peers and industry professionals, learn from one another, and be reminded that none of us are meant to do this work alone.
One especially meaningful moment for me was meeting Linda Anderson, my current instructor in the Dental Practice Management Program at the University of Toronto, in person for the first time. I was so thankful for the opportunity to share how much I am enjoying the course and to thank her personally for her insight and support.
I was also grateful for the opportunity for my partner and me to have dinner with David Harris, CEO of Prosperident, after attending his lecture, "Protecting Your Practice from Problem Employees," another meaningful connection that made the conference experience so memorable. Moments like these remind me how valuable it is to spend time with people who bring wisdom, perspective, and encouragement.
Another highlight was having the opportunity to host two wonderful speakers: Dr. David Galler, presenting on Dental Burnout: Understanding & Dealing with Dental Office Stress, and Minal Sampat, speaking on Mastering Social Media from Engagement to Conversion. Both presentations offered valuable insight and reinforced how much we benefit when knowledge is shared generously.
I also attended a panel lecture featuring Shaun Howe, CPA at MNP, along with Brian Buirs and Penelope Cenac from CDSPI, Anne Genge, Founder of Myla Training Corp, an AI Cybersecurity Expert and Andrea Porter from Scotiabank. The discussion helped identify operational inefficiencies and explore how to do things differently moving forward. It was a strong reminder that running a successful practice requires not only clinical excellence, but also strategy, support, and a willingness to keep learning.
That is why it is so important to surround ourselves with people who can support us and guide us through building and sustaining a successful practice. We all need people who can offer insight, encouragement, and perspective along the way.
The conference concluded with the Tooth Fairy Gala, which felt like a beautiful way to end such a meaningful event. It was a celebration of community, connection, and the people who continue to shape and strengthen our profession.
When I reflect on the conference, what stands out most is not only what I learned but also the relationships that made the experience so memorable.
Over the course of my career, I have seen how much both my enjoyment of the work and my growth within it have improved through making meaningful connections with people. Supporting one another benefits all of us. When we share knowledge, encourage each other, and create space for connection, everyone grows stronger.
To me, that is what this month’s theme of Renewal and Reconnection is really about.
Connections are what make life meaningful. They matter when we can help and support others, and they matter just as much when we are the ones being uplifted. Those relationships enrich our work, strengthen our communities, and remind us that success is never built alone.
This month, I am especially grateful for the connections that continue to shape my path — and for the reminder that when we support one another, we all benefit.
With Courage and Encouragement,
Monica Watson
